Can you keep your stress from turning into distress? Here’s an example. Your workouts were really going well, and then you got a stress injury and you’re in a lot of pain that needs managing, now you’re distressed. Some stress is good, it motivates us to get up each day and work towards a worthy goal of being sound financially, emotionally, and physically. But it can creep over the edge into distress. We can thrive when we develop an arsenal of skills to help us sleep, manage the stress, and make time for recovery from our stressors. Do you have skills you can be proud of, or are you feeling overwhelmed?

Sleep, Stress Management, and Recovery

Deep Health
What is deep health? Managing stressors means managing our complex human lives and all of its stressors, from our health, food, emotions, relationships, environment, and even our deeply felt sense of purpose. We naturally reach for more and more as we mature through life, and each one of these stressors begins to mature with us, and we need to adapt and overcome to promote longevity.

Sleep
Are you chasing sleep? It is with good cause, sleep is the recovery rock star for many of life’s stressors. Sleep can find you, even if you’re not looking for it. When we don’t get enough sleep our body starts to sneak microsleeps in. Microsleeps are less than 30 seconds of sleep, and you know when your body is sneaking them in when you lose track of what you just did. Harness that power and many more every night and make it work for you. Great habits are the basis of any sound plan for success, we can develop them for sleep too, in simple ways we don’t always think of.

Stress Management
We all know it. Some is good, too much is not. Developing daily habits to develop skills around managing stress can look like meditation, going for a run, or listening to music, it is different for everyone, building good habits keeps stress from turning to distress. Take a deep dive on finding your stress sweet spot. Practice overcoming adversity on a daily basis.

Recovery
Rest and recovery are non-negotiable. Without them, our bodies will begin to find ways to get our attention in ways that are very clear, either through shutting down, or sending out distress signals in the form of dysfunction. When we try to work to work out the same muscles day after day after day, and don’t allow them to recover, you lose strength and function instead of gaining muscle. The same holds true for the food we eat, if we eat junk food for days on end, the body starts to tell us we have been taking in bad fuel and we get heartburn, indigestion, poor bowel control. Recovery skills can be applied to all aspects of life when we tackle our stressors with well-developed recovery habits.
